Carnival Time

Carnival in Rio de Janeiro is an explosion of color, music, and dance that transforms the city into a non-stop party. Held annually in February or March before Lent begins, this iconic festival is a must-see for anyone visiting Rio during this time. Rio’s carnival began in 1723 and the samba was introduced in 1917 – so it is a long-standing tradition! It is also the world’s largest festival. The highlight of Carnival is the samba parades at the Sambadrome, where samba schools from various neighborhoods compete with elaborate floats, dazzling costumes, and infectious rhythms.

As a tourist, experiencing Carnival can be as immersive or relaxed as you choose. You can purchase tickets to the Sambadrome for a front-row seat to the parades or join the bloco street parties, which are free and take place all over the city. Dancing alongside locals and other visitors, you’ll feel the contagious energy that makes Rio’s Carnival world-famous.

Another Great Attraction: The Beaches

Rio de Janeiro’s beaches are legendary, offering a perfect blend of sun, sand, and vibrant culture. Copacabana, with its iconic promenade, is ideal for sunbathing and people-watching. Nearby, Ipanema boasts stunning sunsets and a lively atmosphere, attracting surfers and beachgoers alike.

For a more tranquil experience, head to Leblon, known for its upscale vibe and calmer waters. At each beach, enjoy refreshing caipirinhas from beachside kiosks, and join locals in a game of beach volleyball or soccer. Rio’s beaches encapsulate the city’s spirit, providing endless opportunities for relaxation and fun.

Let’s Eat!

Rio de Janeiro’s culinary scene is as diverse and vibrant as its culture. Start your day with a traditional Brazilian breakfast featuring fresh tropical fruits, pão de queijo (cheese bread), and strong coffee. For lunch, indulge in feijoada, a hearty black bean stew with pork, traditionally served with rice, collard greens, and orange slices. This dish, often enjoyed on Wednesdays and Saturdays, is a cornerstone of Brazilian cuisine.

Beachside kiosks and restaurants serve up fresh seafood and refreshing caipirinhas, Brazil’s national cocktail made with cachaça, sugar, and lime. Don’t miss trying acarajé, a deep-fried ball of black-eyed pea dough stuffed with shrimp, a delicacy with roots in Afro-Brazilian culture.

For a truly authentic experience, visit a churrascaria, a Brazilian steakhouse where an endless array of grilled meats is brought to your table. Enjoy the rodízio style of dining, where you can sample different cuts of beef, pork, and chicken until you can eat no more.
